Foundation With Vision of Poverty-Free Bay Area Transforms Homeless Nonprofit Infrastructure

MARTINEZ, CA – SHELTER, Inc. of Contra Costa announced today that it will receive the largest one year foundation and corporate grant in the organization’s history. The Tipping Point Community, headquartered in San Francisco, has awarded SHELTER, Inc. with a grant of $150,000. In addition, through a partnership between Tipping Point Community and Hewlett-Packard Company, SHELTER, Inc. will receive nearly $100,000 worth of technology products to help build critical infrastructure and increase impact for clients.

Last year, SHELTER, Inc. was one of nine nonprofits across the six-county Bay Area added to the Tipping Point Community funding portfolio. In the first grant year, Tipping Point Community not only invested financially in SHELTER, Inc. but provided critical training and connections to increase the organization’s impact in the community.

SHELTER, Inc. Executive Director Timothy O’Keefe stated that, “Being selected as a Tipping Point Community grantee is an honor. In just one year, we have been given significant financial support as well as access to resources that have increased our capacity to effectively move low-income families and individuals in Contra Costa into housing. And we’re just getting started.”

Tipping Point Community, an innovative organization that fights poverty in the Bay Area, has screened hundreds of Bay Area nonprofits to find those most effective at helping low-income people break the cycle of poverty and achieve economic self-sufficiency. Tipping Point Community selects grantees in four key issue areas: Education/Youth, Employment, Family Wellness and Housing.

Since partnering with Tipping Point Community in 2009, Hewlett-Packard Company has donated nearly $2 million worth of technology to organizations in the Tipping Point portfolio, including the latest round of awards. HP employees have committed hundreds of volunteer hours to providing technology assessment, training and legal advice to Tipping Point grantees and their clients.
