Communications & Marketing Manager

ORGANIZATION: SHELTER, Inc. is an independent, community-based non-profit organization created in 1986 to lead the effort to eliminate homelessness. We now operate in Contra Costa, Solano and Sacramento Counties.

MISSION: To prevent and end homelessness among low-income, homeless, and disadvantaged families and individuals by providing housing services, support and resources that lead to self-sufficiency.

PURPOSE of ROLE: This position develops and implements an integrated strategic communication plan to advance brand identity; broaden awareness of programs and priorities; and increases the visibility of SHELTER, Inc. across key stakeholder audiences.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

COMMUNICATIONS & MARKETING

Develop and execute the communications and marketing strategy and plan that retains and expands SHELTER, Inc.’s reputation and thought leadership/subject matter expertise across constituencies including the media and key influencers, assessing and fine-tuning for continuous improvement.

Collaborate regularly with program teams across SHELTER, Inc. and the Director of Development to develop compelling content for external publications, appeals, social media, the web and other channels, particularly participant success stories.

Responsible for sourcing, writing, producing, and distributing content for online and/or offline marketing needs. Uses written, multimedia and video storytelling to create innovative and engaging content in support of the agency's marketing goals.

Execute SHELTER, Inc. print and electronic collateral including appeals, newsletters, annual impact report, marketing collateral and electronic communications managing the brand image across agency.

Actively engage, cultivate and manage media relationships to ensure prominent coverage surrounding SHELTER, Inc.’s programs, special events, press release announcements and other projects.

Serve as the lead point person on media interactions that help promote and/or impact the agency.

Create new content and manage agency website, executing SEO and SEM optimization strategies.

Create and manage the annual communications calendar and budget.

ADMINISTRATION

Manage vendors for outsourced services such as printers, website management, contracted professional services, and planned giving web content.

Manage and update Print and Online Media Lists.

ADDITIONAL TEAM RESPONSIBILITES

As a fully-integrated member of the Development Team, this position will be cross-trained in other duties and software tools to provide backup and engagement support with donors and volunteers, drives, events, and data management.

Conversely, this position provides reasonable training or instruction to team members that enable them to provide reciprocal backup and engagement in primary responsibilities.

EXPECTED PROFICIENCIES:

Demonstrated skill and comfort in proactively building relationships with reporters and editors, and in successful positioning subject matter with the media to achieve high-impact placements.

Must possess strong project management skills with thorough attention to detail.

Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills and a high degree of competency with industry-standard concepts, practices, and procedures across platforms.

Graphic design experience for myriad collateral.

Proficient in Microsoft Suite, Adobe Suite, Constant Contact, WordPress, Canva, web & advertising analytics.

Must be a confident communicator and presenter.

A wide range of creativity and organizational agility.

Strong understanding of best practices in digital/social media forums and ability to create and post content for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn.

Self-motivated with a positive and professional approach to management.

Sincere commitment to work collaboratively with diverse groups, including program participants and staff, board members, volunteers, donors and other supporters.

Strong interpersonal skills, with analytical skills, positive demeanor, and strong desire to provide quality customer service to internal teams and external stakeholders.

Basic photography and video skills.

MINUIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism or related field

Three years of experience in communications functions

Experience with online research and analytics applications

Knowledge of basic graphic design

Experience working in diverse settings with people across all socio-economic spectrums and a wide variety of personalities and roles - staff, residents, local agencies, contractors, lenders, etc.

Must drive personal car on behalf of agency business and have a DMV record that permits driver to be insured under SHELTER, Inc.’s automobile coverage

Must successfully pass a criminal background check

Flexibility to work weekends as needed

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum 2 years of experience in communications functions within the non-profit or media sector.

Video creation & production experience.

Experience with blogging.

Bilingual English/Spanish
